EAST DARTMOUTH COMMUNITY CENTRE MEETING REMINDER

(Tuesday, June 13, 2006) Councillors Andrew Younger (East Dartmouth – The Lakes) and Bill Karsten (Portland – East Woodlawn) would like to remind residents of the East Dartmouth Community Centre meeting to be held Wednesday night at 7:00pm at Caledonia Junior High School.

This meeting marks the end of a public consultation process on the design of the building which is expected to be tendered this summer, with construction beginning in the fall. “This is an important milestone for East Dartmouth and the municipality generally,” says Councillor Younger. “When open, the facility will provide a focal point for community services and activities.”

“Council has worked hard with the recreation centre society and other levels of government over the past two years to make this project a reality and we hope many community members will remember to join us on Wednesday,” says Councillor Karsten.

The Dartmouth East Recreation Centre Society was formed in January 2005, but work on this project dates back to initial efforts by the City of Dartmouth in the 1980s to have a centre built.

Design drawings will also be posted online at http://www.halifax.ca/districts/dist06/District6-EDCC.html following the meeting for those who are unable to attend.

Once the tender is awarded, the Recreation Society, staff, and area councillors will be consulting the public, and through schools, about programs and services that may be operated out of the building.
