Maritime Paper Recognized as Environmental Leader
(Monday, July 10/06) - A local manufacturer of corrugated packaging will be the first recipient of HRM’s new Environmental Stewardship Award.
Mayor Peter Kelly will tour the plant and present the award to Maritime Paper Products Limited on Tuesday for the company’s outstanding efforts in environmental stewardship. The award recognizes businesses who have taken a leadership role in improving the environment and quality of life in HRM.
Maritime Paper Products Limited, located in the Burnside Industrial Park, recently installed a fully self-contained water treatment system as part of a multi-million modernization program. The system, which was designed by a Nova Scotia engineering company, cleans all wastewater created at the plant during the manufacturing process-- allowing only clean water to be released into the HRM sewer system. This technology makes the plant 100 per cent compliant with HRM’s Wastewater Discharge By-Law W-101.
HRM’s By-Law W-101 regulates the quality and quantity of wastewater from all industrial, commercial and institutional locations that may be discharged to the municipal storm/sanitary sewer systems. This by-law empowers staff of HRM’s Pollution Prevention Office to regularly inspect, monitor, educate and enforce the provisions of By-Law W-101 to assist in the protection of our natural aquatic resources.
