Halifax Regional Firefighters to Assist with Food Bank Drive

(Thursday, July 13, 2006) – Firefighters from Lady Hammond Road Fire Station will assist the Mulgrave Park Baptist Church tomorrow with a food bank drive in conjunction with Feed Nova Scotia. Firefighters and a team of approximately 20 youth aged 13-20 will go door-to-door from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. in the north end of Halifax. Food donations will go to Ward 5 and Mulgrave Park Public Housing.

The drive is part of Tidal Impact Youth Missions Event involving close to 1300 youth. Churches in the HRM and Annapolis Valley areas are hosting visiting youth groups from across the Atlantic region, Ontario and Massachusetts from July 10-14. They will be conducting creative Kids Clubs. Nearly 3000 children are expected to attend the clubs held in communities across the city. Each afternoon the participants will engage in compassionate service, helping out at soup kitchens, conducting food drives and other similar projects.

The food drive is an attempt to build bridges into the community and meet some needs of a number of people in the HRM. Through this endeavor they hope to raise the awareness of youth to the challenges people are facing and how they can help make a difference.
