Second Main Street Workshop This Wednesday

(Monday, July 17/06)-- The second of two public workshops on the future of the Main Street business district in Dartmouth will be held this Wednesday.

The Main Street Design Project will help chart the future of the Main Street Business District. The study area includes Main Street and Tacoma Drive, between Caledonia Road and the Parclo. The final consultant report will be presented to the public and Regional Council in the fall. It will include short and long-term recommendations, both for design and construction in the area, as well as a land use by-law and a planning strategy policy.

A drop-in session will be held Wednesday afternoon and a hands-on workshop will be held in the evening. The sessions will be hosted by Councillor Andrew Younger (East Dartmouth – The Lakes); Stewart MacMillan, HRM Streetscape Coordinator; Ekistics Planning and Design, and other members of the Main Street steering committee.

“The public response so far to this work has been phenomenal,” says Councillor Younger. “Many residents and business owners have taken the time to express their views regarding the future of this area. The possibilities are endless and people are clearly very excited about this project.”

Wednesday evening’s session will give participants the chance to work in groups to develop their own designs and planning guidelines for the area. Participants will choose from tools and options created by the consultant, based on feedback from the first workshop and the online survey.

Residents are also invited to fill out the online survey about their thoughts about the area at http://www.halifax.ca/districts/dist06/dist06.html
