Statement by Deputy Mayor Russell Walker
Wednesday, July 19, 2006
I wish to publicly apologize for an off-hand remark that I made and was rightly attributed to me in today’s issue of The Chronicle-Herald in an article dealing with recent incidents of alleged gunplay in Fairview, the District that I represent.
During my interview with the reporter, I jokingly stated that those involved in these alleged incidents were more likely from Spryfield, than from Fairview. That remark was most unfortunate, and certainly unfair, to the residents of Spryfield. It was not my intention to put down anyone and I can certainly appreciate now why some might have been offended by my remarks.
I also want to extend my sincere apologies to Councillors Stephen Adams and Linda Mosher, in whose Districts the community of Spryfield is located, and to all members of Halifax Regional Council for my unkind remarks.
No area or community in HRM has a monopoly on violent crime. Incidents occur in all areas and it is our responsibility to work together with police and other law enforcement agencies to see that the criminals responsible are apprehended and punished by the courts.
In closing, I want to reassure the residents of Fairview that Halifax Regional Police is working diligently on their investigations into these recent reports of gunplay and will hopefully bring the matter to a satisfactory conclusion very soon.
Thank you.
