Councillor Says Area Residents, Lake Users Concerned About Water Levels

(Friday, August 18/06)-- Councillor Debbie Hum said today she has received a number of calls from area residents, as well as members of the general public, regarding lowered water levels of Kearney Lake to enable repairs to a dam.

Councillor Hum said she has been in contact with the federal Department of Fisheries and Oceans, the Nova Scotia Department of the Environment and the Annapolis Group, which owns the dam, seeking assurances there will be as little disruption as possible for residents living on the lake, as well as for those who use Kearney Lake for recreational purposes.

She said there have been significant fluctuations in the water level of the lake, on which an HRM supervised beach and the Maskwa Aquatic Club area located. The contractor has built a temporary dam to lower the lake level so crews can access the areas to be repaired on the permanent dam, but it has not been as effective in controlling the water levels as expected.

“Those who live on the lake are naturally concerned that there be no permanent damage to Kearney Lake as a result of this work, and those who come in from other areas to use the lake for recreational purposes, also want to ensure it continues to be the tremendous recreational asset that it is today,”said Councillor Hum.

The repairs to the aging dam are expected to be completed near the end of September.
