HRM Advised Landfill Gas Odours Temporary
(Thursday, August 24/06)-- Residents in communities surrounding the Otter Lake landfill are advised there may be odours present in the air for the next few days, due to the installation of a new gas collection system at the facility.
HRM has been advised by MIRROR Nova Scotia, operator of the landfill, there are two potential sources of odour:
1.Trenching in upper-half of Cell 3 , which will be completed in next couple of days.
2. Until mid- September, there will be a combination of a permanent gas collection/flaring system in Cells 1, 2 and lower-half of cell 3, and a temporary gas flaring system in upper half of Cell 3, which will be replaced with a hook-up to permanent flares in Cell 3 .
MIRROR began construction last week on the installation of permanent gas collection pipes in the upper half of Cell 3. HRM has been advised that the work requires the excavation/uncovering of waste that is two to three years old , while the pipes are being installed. When a trench is opened, odours are released into the air.
The new landfill gas collection system includes pipes, wells , blowers and flares to burn off the gas, thus eliminating odours.
The work now underway was started one year earlier than originally planned. Delaying the installation of the gas collection/management system in upper half of Cell 3 until next year would have resulted in a high risk of odours until the summer of 2007.
