Major Mural Project Begins In Dartmouth.

(Friday, September 8/06)-- Work on what may be the longest outdoor mural in Canada began today at the Mic Mac Parclo. The mural, which will be over 900 feet in length, will celebrate the history of the Dartmouth Lakes and historic Shubenacadie Canal.

"I am very excited about this project," says District 6 Councillor Andrew Younger. " We have been working on this project for almost two years and to see it start today is very exciting. "

The content for the mural was developed through a variety of means, including consultation with the Shubenacadie Canal Commission, First Nations, the public, and historical groups. Consultations were done in schools, and with the general public as part of various town hall meetings.

The successful artist for the project is Lunenburg based Peter Matyas, who is well- known nationally for his mural work. The cost of the project is approximately $15,000 and funding is being provided through District funds

The wall is owned by the Province and has been a target of graffiti for many years. HRM and the Province have spent considerable dollars removing that graffiti on a regular basis.

"We did some experiments in the District last year with murals to dissuade graffiti and they were very successful," says Councillor Younger. "I am confident this project will also help to deter graffiti, while at the same time help celebrate the rich history of Dartmouth and the importance of the lakes to the municipality."

The Councillor expressed his sincere thanks to HRM and provincial staff, as well as the community at large, for helping to make this project a reality.

"This would not have been possible, if not for the combined efforts of many HRM departments, including Transportation and Public Works and Community Response Initiative."
