300 Youth Expected at YouthFest '06
(Monday, September 18, 2006) -- Youth from across the municipality will gather at Tallahassee Community School in Eastern Passage later this month for the first-ever HRM youth conference.
The event is planned by, and for, youth ages 13-19 years. Its focus is to enable participants to discover new talents and skills, meet new friends and celebrate the many accomplishments of youth in our communities.
YouthFest '06: Testing the Waters is being organized as a result of HRM's Youth Engagement Strategy, which was developed when Community Recreation staff consulted over 6,000 youth throughout the municipality to learn of their needs and priorities ( A copy of the Youth Engagement Strategy Report can be found online at www.hrmyouth.ca)
Youthfest will take place on Friday, September 29-- the first in-service day of this school year. Made possible through the support of HRM staff, the conference will feature over 30 diverse sessions ranging from "non-leadership" leadership, to forming youth action teams, to "How to get your voice heard by HRM councillors."
There will be opportunities to help with a community service project (an abandoned community garden located next to Tallahassee School); to learn to test the waters on canoes or kayaks, and to become a member of a Youth Art Action Team that will work on the completion of a post- conference legacy piece.
The day will also include a harbour cruise, a barbeque and end with an open mic concert. Participants will have the opportunity to try kayaking, volleyball or Greek dancing; to discuss the value of living in diverse communities; to learn about social responsibility; and to learn how to mobilize their communities to action.
