HRM Appeals Court Ruling

(Wednesday, October 11/06)-- HRM has appealed a recent Nova Scotia Supreme Court decision striking down a by-law that prohibited the exportation of waste materials outside the municipality.

Mayor Peter Kelly said HRM’s solid waste system, which was built in response to provincial regulations, was built on a model requiring that all waste collected within the municipality be processed within the municipality.

Mayor Kelly said the Supreme Court decision compromises HRM’s commitment to manage all its own waste and maintain a cost-effective approach to environmental protection in HRM.

It is expected that dates will be set later this month for a hearing of the appeal.
