Sackville Event Showcases Whole-of-Community Approach
to Reducing Graffiti
(Tuesday, October 31, 2006) – Mayor Peter Kelly, Councillors Brad Johns and Bob Harvey will join more than 200 residents, business owners and corporate partners at Acadia School on Thursday as HRM hosts Sackville Drive Proud.
Sackville Drive Proud marks the first community clean-up event as part of HRM’s new Graffiti Management Plan. The plan takes a “whole-of-community” approach to reducing and preventing graffiti in HRM.
New graffiti reporting procedures and standards for removal from public property will be announced, and HRM mural artist, Kate MacLennan, will be on hand with Sackville youth as they unveil a vibrant, one-of-a-kind mural for the Sackville Community. The mural was created as part of the Community Art Pilot Project..
In addition, HRM’s Community Response Team and Sackville Drive Business Association will host a graffiti information session for local businesses.
A coordinated, day-long clean-up of graffiti along Sackville Drive will feature HRM staff cleaning HRM-owned assets, and clean-up crews from Nova Scotia Power, Aliant and Canada Post removing graffiti from their own street installations.
Residents, business-owners and school children have been encouraged to clean-up around their homes, businesses and schools as part of a Sackville Community “Fall 20-Minute Make Over”, Participants will gather at Acadia School at noon for a community barbeque in celebration of their civic pride.
