Apartment Owner Failed to Provide Organics, Recyclables Bins for Tenants

(Thursday, December 7/06)-- An apartment property owner was recently fined $5,000 after pleading guilty to charges of failing to provide tenants with bins for organic materials and recycling.

Pointer Property Management Limited, of Halifax, was fined $2,500 on each of two counts of non-compliance with HRM S-600 By-Law. The properties involved are a 42-unit building located at 270 Willett Street, and a 59-unit building at 20 Westridge Drive, in the Clayton Park area.

HRM will work with commercial property owners and superintendents to achieve compliance, but if this fails, violators will be prosecuted.

Organics and recyclable materials have been banned from the Otter Lake landfill under provincial regulation since 1999 . Separate commercial containers for organics and recyclables are required under municipal bylaw. The maximum fine is $5,000.
