HRM, YMCA Form Partnership For New Mainland Common Community Centre
(Tuesday, July 4/06)-- Halifax Regional Municipality is laying the groundwork for a long-term management agreement with the YMCA of Greater Halifax/Dartmouth to operate the proposed Mainland Common Community Centre in Clayton Park West.
Regional Council approved a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) this evening establishing the parameters for such an agreement. Council unanimously supported a model for HRM to assume ownership of the new facility, and the YMCA assuming responsibility for the long-term operation of the complex.
"We carefully considered all options to find the best possible scenario for all concerned," says Mayor Peter Kelly. "The YMCA ’s mandate and philosophies are strongly aligned with our mission of service to the whole community. I believe in the power of partnerships and this Community Centre will be a wonderful addition to the Mainland North area for years to come."
It is envisioned the project will be a 57,000 square foot community centre, with a comprehensive full-service aquatic component and a "dryland" services area. The aquatic area will consist of two pools, including a six- lane, 25 metre pool, and a multi-use, warm water teaching and therapy pool. The centre will also have a comprehensive fitness centre, studios, multi-purpose programming rooms, social and viewing areas, and change facilities.
Deputy Mayor Russell Walker, who moved the motion at Council this evening, says "Having the YMCA as a partner, the Community will realize their vision of a modern, multi-purpose and multi-district community centre. I am committed to keeping the community closely involved in the evolution of this Centre." The Deputy Mayor, District 16 Councillor Debbie Hum and District 10 Councillor Mary Wile have been spearheading the effort for the past few years to move this project forward.
Bette Warner-Borg quote: "The YMCA is greatly looking forward to working with the community in developing and implementing the capital campaign plan to bring this exciting vision to reality. As well, we are so pleased to have this opportunity to expand the scope and diversity of The YMCA program and service offerings to the citizens of all ages, abilities and backgrounds."
Now that the MOU has been approved, HRM and the YMCA will establish detailed funding, design and construction, and management/lease, and access agreements.
