(Thursday, January 18/07)-- Old Man Winter is having an effect on the new water fountain at Sullivan’s Pond in Dartmouth.
Some citizens are concerned the newly-installed fountain is not operating at full-power and the water spray is not as high as when it was originally turned on.
Councillor McCluskey said HRM staff have advised her this is a temporary situation, the result of the installation of a winter spray nozzle to prevent equipment from freezing.
“The fountain, the result of a partnership between the business community, non-government agencies and HRM, has created a significant addition to Sullivan’s Pond Park. I’m sure we all look forward to the spring when the spray will again reach its full capacity.”
During the past few weeks, temperatures have tended to drop quickly. To maintain the water flow in this type of submerged fountain, it is necessary to change the nozzle to prevent ice build- up from the spray and to keep equipment on the surface of the water from freezing-up.
Phil Townsend, HRM’s Manager of Capital Projects said “HRM will monitor the weather as it relates to the fountain, and at the earliest opportunity this spring, will re-install the summer nozzle and return this magnificent water feature to its proper spray display”.
Councillor McCluskey said Sullivan’s Pond Park is scheduled to undergo a face-lift over the next few years and she looks forward to the results of a Management Plan being developed through HRM Capital District for this area of Dartmouth.
