Banner Day For Dartmouth

(Monday, January 22/07)--A new Banner Program has been implemented in downtown Dartmouth, through a partnership with the Downtown Dartmouth Business Commission, HRM Capital District and District 5 Councillor Gloria McCluskey.

Councillor McCluskey is working with the Business Commission providing support through HRM staff and by allocating portions of her District Discretionary Fund for the economic revitalization of the downtown business area.

“I am pleased to be able to provide support for these initiatives of the Business Commission and I look forward to further programs to enhance our downtown shopping and business district”, she said. ““This latest project will add significantly to the positive public image that is so important to the success of our downtown.”

Councillor McCluskey said the success of this year’s Christmas Spray project, the new Banner Program and others aimed at encouraging greater activity in the downtown core are positive examples of HRM’s commitment to partner with the business community in demonstrating that Dartmouth is a great place to live, work and play.

Shelley Goodson, Vice-Chair of the Downtown Dartmouth Business Commission and owner of Queen of Cups Tea Room on Ochterloney Street said “ Downtown Dartmouth continues its economic recovery and is determined to put its best foot forward in demonstrating to the community that it is alive and well”

The Banner Program will be extended each year to include additional locations and new designs. Current banners portray four historically significant points in Dartmouth’s history: the Starr Skate factory, the Dartmouth- Halifax Ferry, the Rope Works and St. James United Church. They also portray the theme “Dartmouth, Navigating the Future”, which signifies the forward motion of the community, while at the same time recognizing its historic past and unique character.
