Councillor Concerned About Blasting Complaints

(Thursday, January 25/07)-- Councillor Jim Smith said today he has received a number of calls from residents of north Dartmouth concerning blasting for the new Trinity Subdivision and theYorkshire Road extension.

Councillor Smith has been advised by HRM staff that the heavy blasts are expected to continue for the next few days only, and then the excavation will taper off to smaller charges. Blasting can only take place Monday to Friday, from 8 am to sunset.

He was advised that residents, business and property owners within a 300 metre radius of the site have been given notice of the blasting operations. Also, pre-blast inspections on structures within the pre-blast radius, as outlined in Blasting By-law B-600, have been carried out.

Councillor Smith said the blasts must be monitored by seismographs to measure the vibration and sound levels to ensure they do not exceed allowable limits set in the by-law.

“In spite of all of this, I just received a call from a landlord who owns property on Pinecrest Drive, who claims damage occurred to one of his apartments and he is very concerned about further damages,” the Councillor said. “I have asked HRM staff to carefully monitor this situation and make sure that everything is being carried out as it should be.”

For further information, residents may contact Kevin MacDonald, HRM Engineering Technician, at 490-4653.
