Girls Soar Physical Activity Week - A Week Especially for Girls
(Thursday, March 22, 2007) ~ Girls ages nine to sixteen will have their pick of recreation, sport, dance and fitness sessions during the second annual Girls Soar Physical Activity Week. An ‘a la carte’ program of both unconventional and familiar activities is scheduled from Saturday, March 24 to Saturday, March 31, 2007 throughout Halifax Regional Municipality (HRM).
With the participation of many organizations, this week long event showcases activities, facilities and resources available to girls in HRM. The sessions offer opportunities for girls to sample activities at the introductory level in a fun and comfortable atmosphere at facilities in their communities and schools. There are sessions about surfing, skateboarding, trail running, capoeira, yoga, Pilates, aerobics, basketball, handball and volleyball. There is an impressive mix of dance sessions including hip hop, salsa, belly, African and Persian.
“The skateboarding community is very supportive of anyone willing to try. There’s a lot of respect for people’s personal bests. The male skateboarders are accepting and encouraging of the girls. We are starting to see a few more girls riding. The workshop during Girls Soar will introduce the history of skateboarding, terminology, equipment and basic skills.” says Jacquie Thaillaye of the Halifax Skatepark Coalition.
Girls Soar Physical Activity Week is a celebration that aims to increase awareness about the prevalence of physical inactivity among females, educate leaders about ways to increase female participation and enthuse girls to make personal choices for active living as well as showcasing organizations, groups and resources within HRM that support active living.
Girls Soar Physical Activity Week is led by a partnership among Halifax Regional Municipality, Halifax Regional School Board and Nova Scotia Department of Health Promotion and Protection. This week long event is one initiative of Active Halifax Communities (AHC), a partnership of the aforementioned organizations and Capital Health.
