"Peggy – The Sea Sister” Sails for Sister City

(Wednesday, April 11/07) – A special shipment of lobster will make its way south tomorrow, as “Peggy – The Sea Sister” sets sail on HMCS Goose Bay for HRM’s sister city, Norfolk, Virginia.

Peggy is a seven foot lobster sculpture created by local artist Maria Valverde in consultation with the Halifax-Norfolk Sister Cities Citizens Committee. The Committee, along with its counterpart in Norfolk, are exchanging popular street sculptures as a symbol of the two cities’ friendship.

Peggy was acquired from the Abilities Foundation of Nova Scotia, which ran the popular “Lobsters in the City” fundraiser that saw giant lobsters pop up in locations throughout HRM in the summer of 2005. Norfolk will send HRM a giant mermaid sculpture later this year for permanent public display.

Halifax and Norfolk officially twinned in April 2006 during the Azalea Festival in Norfolk. The Halifax-Norfolk Sister Cities Citizens Committee was formed by Mayor Kelly last fall and is chaired by Vice Admiral (Rtd) Duncan “Dusty” Miller. Committee members representing the Canadian Forces arranged for Peggy’s transportation on HMCS Goose Bay and for a special protective crate for shipping.

Peggy will arrive in Norfolk in time for this year’s Azalea Festival.
