McInroy Only Elected Official Serving as Director of National Board
(Thursday, April 19/07)-- Halifax Regional Councillor Harry McInroy was appointed a Director of the Board of the Transportation Association of Canada (TAC) this week, becoming the only elected official now serving on the national organization’s Board of Directors.
Councillor McInroy has been involved in public transit and transportation issues since serving as Deputy Mayor of HRM in 2002/2003. He was a member the municipality’s team that successfully won Transport Canada demonstration project funding for HRM, resulting in the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) project, better known as the MetroLink service which provides express transit service from Cole Harbour and Sackville to the downtown core. The Councillor has also been a member of the Canadian Urban Transit Association (CTA) for many years.
During the past number of years, Councillor McInroy has been required to travel to Ottawa several times a year to attend TAC’s national meetings and that schedule is likely to increase now that he is a Director of the organization.
“I am both pleased and proud to represent Canadian municipalities on the Board, ensuring that the transportation concerns of all communities, both large and small, are kept in the forefront,” he said. “Efficient and cost-effective transportation links are vital in the country the size of Canada, not only for safely moving people, goods and services, but we must also ensure our systems are environmentally friendly and financially sustainable.”
TAC's nearly 500 corporate members include federal, provincial and territorial transportation departments, municipalities, private-sector firms with an interest in road and urban transportation issues, academic institutions and associations.
It is a neutral forum for gathering or exchanging ideas, information and knowledge on technical guidelines and best practices. Its mission is to promote the provision of safe, secure, efficient, effective and environmentally and financially sustainable transportation services in support of Canada's social and economic goals.
In Canada as a whole, TAC has a primary focus on roadways and their strategic linkages and inter-relationships with other components of the transportation system. In urban areas, its primary focus is on the movement of people, goods and services and its relationship with land use patterns.
