Mayor Kelly, Business Community Roll Up their Sleeves
to give Downtown a “Clean Sweep”
(Monday, June 4, 2007) – In recognition of National Environment Week, Mayor Peter Kelly will launch the Capital District Business Associations’ 13th Annual Clean Sweep, Wednesday, June 6th. The Clean Sweep is an event in which businesses volunteer 60 minutes out of their day to take part in a coordinated clean up of the streets of Downtown.
This year, HRM is making it easier for everyone to keep downtown neighbourhoods clean and beautiful. In partnership with the Business Improvement Districts, HRM is outfitting volunteers with new tools to use during the event, and taking the opportunity to launch new waste receptacles and an enhanced flower basket program for the Capital District.
Media are invited to join Mayor Kelly and 21 registered teams (representing 114 volunteers)
as they depart from Grand Parade to clean up downtown.
A coordinated clean up, organized by each Business Improvement District, will be taking place simultaneously in Downtown Dartmouth, Sackville Drive and on Quinpool and Spring Garden Roads. HRM Transportation and Public Works crews will also be out in full force.
Highlights of the launch include:
• the introduction of portable ashtrays to help combat cigarette butt litter,
• sweeper kits and graffiti kits for businesses,
• the official launch of 150 new waste receptacles with ashtrays, including 50 three-stream separation receptacles, and
• the introduction of 8 new students hired by HRM to assist the Capital District business commissions’ annual summer students in the ongoing clean up of downtown.
