HRM Hasn’t Lost That Loving Feeling: Forty-year-old Plaque’s Message Rings True Today

(Thursday, June 28/07) History will repeat itself tomorrow when a plaque presented to the Navy forty years ago to the day will be re-dedicated at City Hall.

According to the Halifax Morning Star newspaper (see attached), on June 29th, 1967, Mayor Allan O’Brien presented a 44-lb bronze commemorative plaque to the Rear-Admiral J.C. O’Brien, Commander of Maritime Command, on the steps of Halifax City Hall. The plaque, created by the city’s Centennial committee, celebrated the ongoing friendship between Halifax and the Royal Canadian Navy.

The plaque was recently recovered and refurbished by Mr. Ian Ross and the Admiral Murray Navy Association of Pictou County. Mayor Peter Kelly will re-dedicate the plaque, reaffirm its sentiments and present it to Rear-Admiral Dean McFadden, Commander of Maritime Forces Atlantic, at City Hall.

“A lot has changed in the forty years since we celebrated Canada’s centennial, but we can always rely on one constant in Halifax Regional Municipality-our deep appreciation for our Canadian Forces,” says Mayor Peter Kelly. “A lot of water and quite a few navy ships have gone under the bridges in the past four decades, but our sincere sentiments and relationship of mutual respect have remained strong.”
