Former Dartmouth Museum to be Demolished
(Tuesday, July 24, 2007) - Preliminary work for demolition of the former Dartmouth Museum building at 100 Wyse Road will begin on Monday (July 30).
The building, which has been vacant for a number of years, has been found unsafe and unsuitable for use as a public building. It will be demolished and the site landscaped to match existing features of the adjacent Dartmouth Common.
The front of the building will be fenced, but the grassed area and parking lot around the building will be accessible to the public during the Natal Day weekend.
During the actual demolition of the building, which begins August 7, the site will be blocked off for approximately eight weeks. The site will be surrounded by construction fencing from the sidewalk entrance on Alderney Drive, along the roadway to the upper parking lot on Wyse Road. Pedestrians will be redirected to the respective crosswalks on Alderney and Wyse Road by appropriate signage
In the interest of public safety, the Dartmouth Common gates bordering the work site will be locked for the duration of the project. The parking lot will remain closed to all users, including Metro Transit Park and Ride, from August 7th until the end of the construction schedule.
The existing asphalt walkway through the property from Alderney Drive to Wyse Road will be replaced with new asphalt and 24 of the existing parking spaces, plus two handicapped parking spaces, will be retained on the east side of the site. The remaining portions of the former parking areas will be sodded. Existing landscaping and trees are to be protected and will remain.
