Sandcastle Competition Celebrates its 29th Year

(Wednesday, August 8/07)-- Dragons, mermaids, castles with fancy turrets---these are just a few of the sculptures you can expect to see this weekend at the 29th annual Clam Harbour Sandcastle and Sculpture Competition.

Come along and join the close to 20,000 people of all ages who turn out for this day of fun in the sun (hopefully) each year.

The event takes place on Sunday, August 12, beginning at 8 AM at the Clam Harbour Beach Provincial Park on the Eastern Shore. Watch these amazing creations be sculpted before your eyes and then wait for the Judging, which takes place between 2 PM and 4 PM, to see who the winners will be.

Mayor Peter Kelly will be on hand again as a Judge for the competition. “The sculptures are magnificent. It’s fun to be a creator, and it’s also fun to watch the creators at work. Every year, I come away from the event more amazed at what a person with a lively imagination and a bucket, a shovel, and a sandy beach can create in just a few short hours.” There are two levels of competition for both sandcastles and sculptures: Children (under 12) and Adults. Cash prizes will be awarded for winning entries. The entry fee for the competition is $20 and children under 12 are free. There is no general admission fee.

Food vendors will be on site offering everything from candy apples to fruit smoothies to hot dogs and hamburgers. Shuttle transportation from parking areas to the beach will be provided. The site is wheelchair accessible.

"It's great that we can look forward to the sandcastle event happening in August," said District 1 Councillor Steve Streatch. "The community is behind this great event and will ensure that it is another great success."

The Clam Harbour Sandcastle and Sculpture Competition is possible due to the generous support of the community, the Halifax Regional Municipality, and the Province of Nova Scotia. This event is alcohol-free.

Directions: Clam Harbour Beach Provincial Park is located 84 km from Dartmouth on Route 7 along the Eastern Shore. Turn right at Lake Charlotte.
