The Nature of Things to Showcase HRM
(Friday, August 10/07) Award winning TV series, The Nature of Things, wraps up a week of filming for an upcoming documentary on climate change today. The show will be featuring three Canadian cities - Toronto, Vancouver and the Halifax Regional Municipality. Films crews have been in HRM for the last week filming the impacts of climate change on our area and noting the positive actions and leadership role our municipality is taking to meet these challenges.
Stephen King, HRM’s Manager of Environmental Performance says, “HRM is being impacted in a number of ways by climate change with sea level rise, storm surges and more frequent severe weather. These are examples of some of our more prominent concerns.” HRM has responded with its Climate SMART Program, Emergency Preparedness efforts , and such things as incorporating anticipated sea level rise into the design of new infrastructure like the new Harbour Treatment Plants . “It’s a community wide collaborative effort.”, says Mr. King. This is evident with local industries starting to integrate climate change considerations into their everyday decision making and the supporting science and research efforts by Environment Canada and Natural Resources Canada, including the Atlantic Hurricane Centre .
The Nature of Things producer, David Tucker, recognized the impact climate change has had on our environment. “Halifax has been galvanized into action after Hurricane Juan,” says Mr. Tucker. “It has been interesting to hear all the information addressing climate change. Halifax is very aware of the issues.”
The documentary will be featured on CBC’s The Nature of Things in late November.
