Firefighter Combat Challenge comes
to Halifax
“Toughest Two minutes in Sports”
(Tuesday, August 28, 2007) - Halifax Regional Fire & Emergency is hosting the 2007 Scott Firefit Combat Challenge Nationals at Bishops Landing, downtown Halifax from August 30 - September 2, 2007. Fire departments from across Canada are sending teams and hundreds of people are expected to turn out for the event.
The Firefighter Combat Challenge is a competition based on firefighting tasks commonly performed in emergency situations. The Challenge is very demanding and many participants perform at the level of elite athletes.
The opening ceremonies will begin at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, August 30th . The competitions will begin shortly after and will continue throughout the weekend. The firefighters compete in several categories, including best individual, NxG2 relay, and team relay. Top place winners go on to represent the Country at the World Combat Challenge Competition in Las Vegas, Nevada November 4-8, 2007.
Halifax Regional Firefighters competed in the Eastern Quebec Regionals in Gaspe, Quebec July 28-29 and had seven (7) firefighters place in the top 10 and for team results, placed in the top 3, placing 1st and 2nd. A large contingent of Halifax Regional Firefighters will be competing in the Nationals.
Firefighters call it the toughest two minutes in sports. But to the hundreds of families that turn out each year to watch, it’s just a fun day with lots of entertainment and excitement.
The firefighters compete on a course that includes a high rise pack carry, a hose hoist, advancing charged hose lines, forcible entry, and rescue. The teams receive points for efficiency, speed and safety.
