Construction to Begin on New Gordon R. Snow Community Centre

(Thursday, September 13/07) -- Representatives of all three levels of government and residents of the Fall River area attended the official sod-turning ceremony today for the new Gordon R. Snow Community Centre.

The new recreation centre will be part of a 38,000 square-foot combined Gordon R. Snow Community Centre and Zone 4 Fire Station-45, improving the fire and rescue services to the community. The multi-million dollar facility is being funded by HRM, federal and provincial governments.

The rural site encompasses approximately nine acres and the lakeshore site, which is rich in cultural and historical significance, offers opportunities for boating, swimming and skating on Lake Thomas. Artifacts, items and information of this cultural and historical significance will be displayed and interpreted within the facility as well as outside on site.

District 2 Councillor Krista Snow said “To better serve the needs of the community, the new facility will include a community policing office, fitness centre, program rooms, outdoor theatre, and skateboard park, just to name a few. It’s also fully wheelchair accessible and meets stringent requirements for reduced energy consumption and environmental impacts.”

“The new Gordon R. Snow Community Centre will provide many opportunities for Fall River residents and enhance this community’s quality of life by offering a much-needed space for recreational activities, encouraging health and wellness, and bringing the neighbourhood together in a safe environment,” said Mayor Peter Kelly. “It’s very fitting that a centre that will give so much to Fall River is named in honour of Mr. Snow, a former councillor who gave a great deal of his own time, energy and commitment to his community.”

“By investing in the Fall River Community Centre, we are investing in our children and increasing physical activity in the community,” said Jamie Muir, Minister of Service Nova Scotia and Municipal Relations. “As our governments and communities continue to work together, we are seeing better results and a stronger, healthier Nova Scotia for everyone.”

“Canada’s New Government is getting things done for the people here in HRM...and all Atlantic Canadians,” said South Shore-St. Margaret’s MP Gerald Keddy, on behalf of the Honourable Peter MacKay, Minister of Defense and Minister of the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency. “We’re taking action to build a strong and vibrant economy here in Nova Scotia and across this country.”
