Spider Lake Project Receives Provincial Funding
(Thursday, September 20, 2007) - Councillor Andrew Younger today acknowledged a provincial government announcement of $112,000 towards the Spider Lake water servicing project.
"I am grateful to Premier Rodney MacDonald and Service Nova Scotia and Municipal Relations Minister Jamie Muir for their recognition that this project deserved funding. I was always concerned that a significant cost driver of this project was the cost of crossing the Highway 107 by-pass. This funding will offset that cost.", said Councillor Younger.
Councillor Younger had previously sought and received support from HRM Regional Council to seek the funding. Over the past eight months, Councillor Younger has been actively lobbying for the funding to this project.
The Spider Lake water project was approved by Regional Council in August and work began on Monday. Residents in the area approved the project and its projected cost in a mail-in survey held last year. A majority of residents have indicated concerns with water supply and/or quantity in the area over the past few years. Last year the province also indicated it could be an at risk area due to geology and historic gold mining operations in the general area.
Councillor Younger went on to say, "Many residents indicated they wanted municipal water services but were concerned about the cost. This funding announcement will reduce the cost each household will have to pay."
The projected cost of the project was estimated at $14,500 per household. While the exact impact per residence is being worked out, it is expected the funding announced by the province will reduce the cost by approximately $2000 - $3000 per household.
