Special Olympian Jackie Barrett To Be Honoured at City Hall

(Monday, October 22/07) Mayor Peter Kelly and Councillor Steve Adams (District 18, Spryfield-Herring Cove) will honour Special Olympian Jackie Barrett at City Hall tomorrow prior to the evening session of Halifax Regional Council.

Mr. Barrett recently returned from the Special Olympics World Summer Games in Shanghai, China, where he earned four gold medals in powerlifting: squat (252.5 kg), deadlift (295 kg), benchpress (125kg), and the overall title.

“It’s always a privilege to meet elite athletes who represent our region, but rarely do we have the opportunity to greet an athlete who is as decorated as Jackie Barrett,” says Mayor Kelly. “I know all HRM residents are very proud of Jackie’s efforts, as we are of all the Special Olympic athletes who work so hard to represent Canada at these prestigious competitions.”

“Jackie’s determination and accomplishments as an athlete are an inspiration to all of us. He is a true role model for our entire community,” says Councillor Adams.
