Mayor's Roundtable on Violence Discussions Get Underway

(Wednesday, November 14/07) - The final sessions of the Mayor's Roundtable on Violence will get underway tomorrow morning at HRM Council Chambers. The Roundtable, which runs November 15-17, will be aired in its entirety live on Eastlink Television.

"Violence and perceptions of violence in our communities are critical concerns for HRM residents," said Mayor Peter Kelly. "We've worked extremely hard over the past year to engage key people in this Roundtable process, from residents, community groups, academics and the media, to police, RCMP and the criminal justice system. I am looking forward to the discussions this week and ahead to the final report."

The Roundtable sessions are a culmination of the extensive research and consultation that has been ongoing for the past year on violence in HRM. Community stakeholders will report to Mayor Kelly, the Mayor's Advisory Committee and Roundtable facilitator Professor Don Clairmont on specific areas of interest, including summaries of the Community Roundtables held recently throughout HRM and themed focus groups held in June and July; results of the comprehensive phone and mail-in surveys conducted from June to September; and presentations on such topics as community engagement, youth, the criminal justice system and strategies for change. (See attached agenda below.)

A detailed report will be delivered this winter outlining a workable long-term strategy with specific recommendations for community stakeholders such as municipal, provincial and federal governments, as well as police, school boards, parents and neighbours.

"I would like to extend my sincere appreciation to each and every person who shared their concerns, opinions, time and expertise-you have played an invaluable part in this Roundtable," said Mayor Kelly. "Together we can make a difference, and I will work diligently and passionately to ensure that our efforts result in action that will make a difference."
