Display to Commemorate 90th Anniversary of Halifax Explosion

(Monday, November 26, 2007) - On December 6, 1917, a massive explosion ripped through the cities of Halifax and Dartmouth, destroying buildings and claiming nearly 2,000 lives. The story of that ill-fated day is filled with devastation and sorrow, but more importantly, is a testament of strength and courage against adversity.

This year will mark the 90th Anniversary of the Halifax Explosion and as part of the commemorative events scheduled to take place, a travelling display has been developed to remember those who lost their lives, pay tribute to those who survived, and offer sincere thanks to those who provided aid following that dark day.

Beginning December 3, the display will travel to Scotia Square Mall, Park Lane, Halifax Shopping Centre and Mic Mac Mall, spending one week at each site. Created by the Halifax Explosion 90th Anniversary Committee, the display outlines the series of events that led to the tragedy, the devastation the explosion left in its wake, and the substantial relief effort that took place after the blast.

Beyond enhancing the public's knowledge of this significant event, it is also hoped that the display will encourage any unknown survivors, or families of survivors, to come forward to share their recollections and experiences of that day.

Currently, it is difficult to determine exactly how many survivors there are, given that many individuals and families relocated following the tragedy. There are at least forty survivors who continue to reside in HRM, but throughout the country and beyond there could be many more.
