Streets Re-Named in Honour of Halifax Explosion

(Wednesday, December 5/07)- Councillor Patrick Murphy said a number of streets in north end Halifax have been re-named to commemorate the Halifax Explosion, as part of HRM's civic addressing program.

Duffus Street Extension was re-named Wells Street, after firefighter Billy Wells, who was the driver and the lone survivor of the Halifax fire truck "The Patricia."

A former part of Albert Street was re-named Vincent Street, in honour of Vince Coleman, the wireless operator who telegraphed by Morse Code a Halifax-bound passenger train urging the engineer not to proceed to the city because of the pending explosion.

The former Robie Street Extension was re-named Massachusetts Avenue, in honour of the people of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. Governor Samuel W. McCall rallied the people of his state to the relief of the stricken people of Halifax and Dartmouth.

Other streets re-named that were part of the area known as Richmond in the north end are Kenny Street, formerly Dartmouth Avenue, and Intercolonial Street, formerly part of Kempt Road., that was named after the Intercolonial Railway.
