Weather to Determine Timing of Overnight Parking Ban in Urban Core

(Friday, December 7/07)-- While the overnight winter parking ban will not be in effect in the HRM Urban Core prior to December 17, 2007, the starting date will be determined by prevailing weather conditions.

HRM will notify the public through the media in advance of the implementation. Once the ban comes into effect, it will apply each night from 1:00 am to 7:00 am until March 31, 2008 regardless of weather conditions.

However, motorists are reminded that the provincial overnight winter parking ban will be in effect starting on December 17, 2007 in areas outside the HRM Urban Core. Therefore, no vehicles shall be parked between the hours of 1:00 a.m. to 7:00 a.m. on streets located in the former County of Halifax that are maintained by the Nova Scotia Department of Transportation and Infrastructure Renewal.

Regardless of the overnight winter parking ban, residents are reminded that Section 139 of the Motor Vehicle Act provides that parked vehicles obstructing snow removal or winter maintenance operations may be removed at the owner's cost regardless of time or date.

Having streets free and clear of parked vehicles during snow storms makes for more efficient and cost-effective snow removal operations and facilitates better mobility by emergency response agencies. The cooperation of motorists is appreciated.
