Main Street Streetscape Public Meeting Scheduled

(Monday, December 17, 2007) Exciting things are happening in the Main Street / Tacoma Drive area. Over the past two years, residents and business owners have participated in meetings to direct the future of the Main Street Business District. The meetings were well attended, and many people have provided feedback through surveys, letters, and phone calls. Now the final plan is ready for presentation to the public.

A public meeting is scheduled for Monday, January 14th at Stevens Road United Baptist Church. An open house will begin at 6:00pm with a formal presentation at 7:00pm.

"The participation in this project over almost two years has been phenomenal and I think the result is a plan that will reinvigorate the business district and surrounding neighbourhoods," says Councillor Younger (East Dartmouth – The Lakes). "This plan was developed by meeting with residents and business owners in workshops and other public forums. Importantly, major property owners were consulted as to how they see the future redevelopment of their own lands."

The goal of the plan is to create an environment which returns the area to its original purpose – a walkable neighbourhood business district that is attractive as a destination to area residents and those from elsewhere in the municipality. The Regional Plan, approved by Regional Council, named the Main Street / Tacoma Drive area as a District Centre – an area supported through transit, and recognized for its importance to the community and the entire municipality as a mixed-use, central meeting, business, and living space.

In addition to the public meeting, a second meeting will be held later the same week specifically for businesses to talk about the creation of a Business Improvement District.
