Mayor and Chief of Police Express Concern Over Last Night’s Incident

Mayor Peter Kelly and Chief Frank A. Beazley are troubled by the violent incident from overnight in the downtown core which led to 38 arrests and required a significant amount of police resources to quell the disturbance.

“The level of intoxication in the downtown core is extremely disconcerting,” said Mayor Kelly. “We are particularly concerned about heavily discounted drink nights, which typically result in increased violence.”

“Last night’s incident is just one of a number of serious assaults in the downtown area in the last two weeks,” said Chief Beazley. “These and many other incidents are associated to the consumption of alcohol, and are resulting in bar staff, citizens and police officers alike being assaulted.”

Over the course of the past year, Halifax Regional Municipality has been calling on the Province of Nova Scotia to address issues surrounding the regulation of licensed establishments through the Alcohol and Gaming Authority.

Halifax Regional Police has liaised with the Alcohol and Gaming Authority on these recent incidents. Both Mayor Kelly and Chief Beazley are encouraged that the Province has today taken action against the licensee involved.
