Statement by Mayor Peter J Kelly on the Passing of Councillor Gary Martin
On behalf of Halifax Regional Council and HRM staff, I extend sincerest condolences
to the family and friends of District 21 Councillor Gary Martin, who passed away in hospital last evening after a courageous battle with cancer.
Councillor Martin epitomized the term "public service", having served the citizens of our community for more than 25 years as a police officer and the last few years as Council representative for the citizens of Bedford.
Gary's wit, wisdom and common-sense approach to dealing with the many challenges our community faced everyday will certainly be missed. Councillor Martin was a big man, with an even bigger heart. He was one who quietly volunteered his time and effort for things that he believed would benefit our citizens and our community. Gary never sought praise for himself, but only for those who worked along with him to make HRM a better community in which to live, learn, work and play.
Only those closest to him know the pain and suffering Councillor Martin endured for the past few years as a result of cancer, but he was never one to complain, never one to ask "why me?" and never one to say "I'm giving up the fight."
Gary's greatest joy was his family, and we extend our deepest sympathies to his wife Darlene, his daughters and his grand child. Councillor Martin was a giant among man in more ways than one.
On behalf of Council and all residents of HRM, I want to extend our thoughts and prayers to the family at this most difficult time.
Flags at all HRM Facilities will fly at half mast in honour of Councillor Martin.
Mayor Peter Kelly
