Main Street BID Vote Successful

(Friday, February 22/08)-- Businesses in the Main Street / Tacoma Drive area have voted 63% in favour of the creation of a Business Improvement District Association.

The creation of such an association was a recommendation of the Main Street Streetscape Project, led by District 6 Councillor Andrew Younger. The vision for Main Street and area is a walkable neighbourhood commercial area respecting its role as the route for 43,000 cars a day.

"I am pleased that businesses in the area have decided to become directly involved in improving the area for their own business interests and area residents," says Councillor Younger. "This project and the future of Main Street as an important commercial district is enhanced and furthered by the strong support of area businesses."

Voting by mail closed Thursday at 4:30pm and the votes were tallied today.

Business Improvement District Associations are funded through a levy on property tax bills. The associations determine their own governance and spending priorities based on overall rules established by council. They are eligible for cost-shared funding on certain projects from HRM.

The entire Main Street project can be viewed online at www.andrewyounger.ca.
