HRM Reminds Dog Owners to Pick Up After Pets
(Tuesday, April 15, 2008) - Halifax Regional Municipality is reminding dog owners to pick up after their pets. Beginning Friday April 18, HRM staff will be marking the off leash areas and sports fields where dog waste has not been picked up to warn passers-by and encourage dog owners to pick up after their pets.
For three weeks, HRM staff will place orange miniature flags beside the dog waste. Point Pleasant Park will be the first park to undergo the spring cleaning reminder, which is a part of the Off Leash Parks Strategy.
On June 26, 2007 Halifax Regional Council adopted the HRM Off Leash Parks Strategy. Since then HRM has been implementing the Strategy at several pilot off leash program sites in HRM parks and sports fields. The off leash areas serve as test sites for off leash activities and are being closely monitored for cleanliness. The success of the program depends on responsible pet owners picking up after their pets.
HRM will continue to monitor the Off Leash pilot areas, and will post results of the strategy online at www.halifax.ca/property/OLPS/index.php
