Chebucto Heights Students Celebrate Arbor Day with Tree-planting Ceremony

(Monday, June 9, 2008) - Mayor Peter Kelly will join students in Grades 3 and 4 at Chebucto Heights School on Monday for a tree-planting ceremony as part of HRM Urban Forestry's annual Arbor Day celebration.

Each year, HRM donates two trees to a school in the Municipality which are planted on school property by Urban Forestry. This year, HRM's new aerial lift (that goes as high as 70 ft) will be on display at the school.

Arbor Day was founded by Julius Sterling Morton with the first Arbor day held in 1872, in Nebraska. The purpose of Arbor day is to educate people on the importance and benefits of trees. Trees benefit us by removing pollutants from the atmosphere, providing us with oxygen, assisting in storm water and asphalt retention, acting as wind breaks, providing shade and climate control and offering privacy, while being aesthetically pleasing.
