NEWS RELEASE

Dingle Beach Party and Supervised Beach Reopening

(Friday, August 1, 2008)-- Mayor Peter J. Kelly and Councillor Linda Mosher, District 17 Purcell's Cove - Armdale, will be hosting the 1st Annual Dingle Beach Party.

The 1st Annual Dingle Beach Party is being held to celebrate the official reopening of the Dingle Beach and the return of Life Guards to the swimming area. Most importantly, we are celebrating the fact that we can once again swim at the Dingle, a jewel on the North West Arm.

As a result of the Harbour Solutions Project, specific water and sediment quality testing shows levels that are well within acceptable guidelines for both swimming and recreational contact. Divers have removed debris and physical hazards, HRM has cleaned the beach of debris and added new sand. Buoys and nets have been installed to indicate the supervised area adjacent to the playground at the South Beach.

Having spent most of her life living in Fleming Park, Councillor Linda Mosher had the pleasure of swimming at the Dingle as a child. Now residents and their children are once again afforded this opportunity. "The fact that the Dingle is once again open for swimming is a un-paralleled accomplishment for our district" Mosher said.

"This is a significant milestone for our district and I am proud to have been on the Harbour Solutions Committee that worked from the start of the tender, up to and including implementation" said Mosher.

Mayor Peter Kelly said, " The restoration of this historic beach site is a milestone for our harbour and a legacy that will enjoyed for years to come. I invite everyone to come down and join in the celebration."

Mayor Kelly and Councillor Mosher invite everyone down Dingle Beach, Sir Sandford Fleming Park, off the Purcell's Cove Rd. Saturday, August 2nd from 11:00am- 3:00pm for a great beach party, barbecue, refreshments, ice cream, live music by E-Soul, kids games, prizes and a swim at beautiful Dingle beach. Bring your sun screen, hat, beach towel & chair and join in the fun. Lifeguards will be on duty.

The party will take place rain or shine. (Overflow parking will be available at the Frog Pond and John W. MacLeod Elementary School parking lots with complimentary shuttle service to the park by Metro Transit.
