PUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENT

Penhorn Lake, Oathill Lake, Lake Banook

and Red Bridge Pond - Swimming Advisory

(Tuesday, September 2, 2008) - The public is advised that water test samples taken on August 13 at the deep station and outlet of Oathill Lake, deep station of Penhorn Lake, and outlet of Lake Banook detected fecal coliform bacteria levels exceeding provincial and federal recreational guidelines at the locations of all four inlets. This lake is not an HRM supervised swimming location.

Under these conditions, swimming and other forms of contact recreation should be avoided until further notice.

While not generally used for swimming, Red Bridge Pond also experienced a high test result at the inlet but the outlet and Lake Mic Mac both experienced satisfactory results.

HRM tests the water quality of a limited number of unsupervised lakes for ecological reasons on a seasonal basis only. Only lakes with supervised swimming beaches are tested on a weekly basis for recreational reasons during the swimming season. For a list of the lakes HRM tests for ecological reasons, please check the HRM website at http://www.halifax.ca/environment/lakesandrivers.html.
