(Thursday, March 5, 2009) - Mayor Peter Kelly will be participating in the Federation of Canadian Municipalities (FCM) Standing Committee on Community Safety & Crime Prevention on Friday, March 6, 2009 in Victoria, BC. Two (2) of the items that the Standing Committee will be discussing are - Chronic Offenders and Pandemic Flu.

"Public Safety has been identified as one of Council’s four focus areas and is a priority for the Halifax Regional Municipality," says Mayor Kelly.

The Mayor’s Roundtable Report on Violence which took an in depth look at public safety in HRM and developed recommendations on the holistic approach required to address the root causes of crime and enhance community safety, led to the recent appointment of a Public Safety Officer for HRM.

"The opportunity to participate in these discussions is very timely and I look forward to sharing information with my colleagues on this most important issue that faces many municipalities today," says the Mayor.
