HRM Human Rights Issue
(Tuesday, April 7, 2009) Halifax Regional Fire and Emergency Services has been dealing with an issue that is before the Human Rights Commission. This is a personnel matter and cannot be discussed as HRM must respect the privacy of all its employees.
However, what we can tell you is that all HRM business units, including Halifax Regional Fire and Emergency Services (HRFES), are committed to providing and maintaining a working environment that is free of harassment, and in which all employees are treated with respect. All employees have the right to be treated fairly, respectfully and with dignity in a workplace, and they have the responsibility to treat others in the same manner. In case employees feel their rights have been negatively impacted in the workplace, they are encouraged to raise those issues with the management and HR, as per the HRM Anti-Harassment policy.
“HRFES is dedicated to creating and maintaining a work culture that is inclusive, welcoming and respectful of differences, says Chief Bill Mosher. “Our organization learns and benefits from diverse employees who, not only, represent the diverse communities we serve, but increase creativity and effectiveness of the services we provide.”
A summary report of all actions that have been taken as a result of the complaint will be brought before Council on April 21st and, following that, more information will be made available.
