HRM Youth Group Cleans Up To Help Environment

(Thursday, April 23, 2009) - HRM Community Recreation Services and the Adventure Earth Centre’s youth group HEAT (Helping the Environment and Acting Together) will present the fourth annual ‘Pick up and Win’ day this Sunday, April 26 (2 p.m.) at the Dingle Tower.

HEAT started their “Pick Up and Win” anti-littering campaign in the Spring of 2005. Approximately 100 members of the group work to pick up discarded coffee cups and then converge on the Dingle Tower on Halifax’s Northwest Arm to display their results and award prizes based on which members collected the most. The event promotes anti-littering, the use of reusable mugs and also proves to be a tremendous example of the difference motivated individuals can make in their community and for their environment.

The Adventure Earth Centre in Halifax’s Sir Sandford Fleming Park has offered unique and award-winning programs to over 50,000 youth since 1981. The centre offers children and youth programs that focus on environmental education, youth leadership and outdoor recreation. HEAT’s members include current and former Adventure Earth Centre Youth Leaders who have taken the initiative to explore ways to make a positive contribution towards building a healthy and sustainable community.

HRM invites members of the public and media to visit the Dingle Tower on Sunday, April 26 at 2 p.m. and celebrate their accomplishments.
