Tree Planting at Portland Estates Elementary to Mark Arbor Day

(Tuesday, June 16, 2009) - Students in grades 3 and 4 from Portland Estates Elementary School will join Mayor Peter Kelly and District 7 Councillor Bill Karsten in an Arbor Day tree planting on Wednesday, June 17.

Each year, HRM donates two trees to a school to be planted on the school property with assistance from Urban Forestry. The tree planting takes place at 9:30 a.m. at the school, 45 Portland Hills Drive.

Arbor Day was founded by Julius Sterling Morton with the first Arbor Day held in 1872 in Nebraska. The purpose of Arbor Day is to educate people on the important benefits of trees.
