HRM Co-hosting Canadian District Energy Association’s Annual Conference

(Wednesday, June 17, 2009) - Leading experts and practitioners from government, energy and utilities, and the planning community are gathering to share their insight on the growing role for district energy in today’s carbon constrained economy.

“As part of our ongoing commitment to sustainability and energy self-reliance, HRM is pleased to be co-hosting this important conference with Dalhousie University”, said Mayor Peter Kelly.

This is the first time the Canadian District Energy Association (CDEA) has held their conference in Atlantic Canada. The Canadian District Energy Association’s (CDEA) 14th Annual Conference & Exhibition opens today, June 17th, with a keynote address by Ms. Elizabeth May, Environmentalist, Lawyer and Leader of the Green Party of Canada, to emphasize the increasing attention being paid to clean forms of energy.

“District energy is gaining momentum across Canada as a solution for communities, utilities, institutions and other organizations interested in securing their energy future and improving their economic base, enhancing sustainability and increasing energy efficiency”, said Mayor Peter Kelly.

Conference sessions will contain key updates on the emerging policy and technology issues affecting the use of district energy, and also provide delegates with take-home knowledge that they can use to develop and implement their own district energy initiatives. In addition to providing the latest information on innovations and incentives that continue to drive the growth of district energy, participants will also look critically at the challenges ahead and the potential benefits that district energy holds for communities, the environment, and the economy.
