Municipal EMO prepared for Hurricane Bill

(Friday, August 21, 2009) - HRM’s Emergency Measures Organization continues to monitor the Hurricane Bill situation, be prepared for its potential impact, and coordinate a response.

The municipal EMO is following the Canadian Hurricane Centre’s storm tracking and warning system and is in close contact with emergency officials from EMO Nova Scotia and Public Safety Canada as well as all providers of emergency services, municipal operations, and utilities.

We are ready to respond at very short notice over the weekend,” said EMO Coordinator Barry Manuel. “Throughout HRM we have staff on call to help this municipality through this storm and its aftermath.”

Mayor Peter Kelly said he is confident that the municipality has taken all of the steps necessary to prepare for the storm, and he urged residents to take precautions as well.

Please take the time to secure your properties, put away lawn furniture, and remove any objects that could pose a threat if they are caught up in a strong wind,” said the Mayor. “Remember to have a plan for your family’s safety and an emergency kit ready that includes such things as a battery-operated radio and a supply of non-perishable food, medications and first aid supplies.”

Information for the public will be available at www.halifax.ca and through the HRM call centre at 490-4000. The website information will be updated as we learn more about the path of Hurricane Bill throughout the weekend.
