PUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENT

Chanukah Celebration Tonight in Grand Parade

(Monday, December 14, 2009) - HRM invites residents to celebrate Chanukah at an event this evening at 6 p.m. in Grand Parade Square. Mayor Peter Kelly will bring greetings on behalf of HRM.

WHAT: Lighting of the Chanukah Menorah

WHEN: Monday, December 14, 2009 - 6 p.m.

WHERE: Grand Parade Square, Halifax

Chanukah is an eight-day celebration that runs from December 12 to December 19. It represents the Hasmonean, or Jewish warriors’, victory over their Greek oppressors more than 2000 years ago. It also commemorates the miraculous cruse of oil - sufficient to burn only one day but lasting for eight.

The giant Menorah has been erected by the Chabad Lubavitch Organization to promote awareness and appreciation of the Chanukah Festival and its message - the triumph of freedom over oppression, spirit over matter and light over darkness.
