Geese Leaving Sullivan’s Pond for the Winter

(Friday, December 18, 2009) - The geese that are such a popular attraction at Sullivan’s Pond will be taking a winter vacation this year. The 12 geese, all of the Embden variety, will be leaving the pond to spend the coldest months at a Hope for Wildlife Society facility.

Because Embden geese are flightless, their ability to search for food is limited and they have come to rely upon food supplied by HRM. Volunteers with the non-profit Hope for Wildlife Society will be removing the geese, starting this afternoon, and transporting them to a facility in Seaforth that will offer greater shelter in harsh winter weather.

The geese will be returned to Sullivan’s Pond in the spring.

HRM has made a donation to the Hope for Wildlife Society to cover the costs of caring for the geese over the winter months.
