Councillor Sloane says thank-you for assistance during fire

(Tuesday, January 12, 2009) - Downtown Councillor Dawn Sloane thanked Halifax Regional Fire and Emergency, Regional Police, Nova Scotia Power, the Red Cross and the Westin Hotel today for coming to the aid of residents and business owners of a South Street property that caught fire this morning.

Shortly after 8 a.m. firefighters responded to 5167 South Street where smoke could be seen coming from the building, one of a group of buildings containing four restaurants and 18 apartments. More than 40 firefighters fought the fire throughout the day.

“Our firefighters worked hard to limit the damage of this serious fire, and I commend them for their efforts to protect the lives and the property of everyone within this block of buildings,” said Coun. Sloane.

The Councillor also recognized the efforts of the Red Cross to register 25 tenants of the building and provide them with comfort packs, the Westin Hotel which has offered the displaced rooms for the night, and the building owner for providing assistance to his tenants.

“It’s times like these that demonstrate to all of us what it means to be a good neighbour,” she said.
