FREE VERSE - two days with Canadian Poets Laureate

(Tuesday, July 13, 2010) - HRM Poet Laureate Shauntay Grant, with support from HRM Community Relations & Cultural Affairs, invites residents to join her for two days of creativity and poetry during FREE VERSE.


FREE VERSE is the public portion of a first-of-its-kind national gathering of Canadian Poets Laureate. The Poet Laureates include: Jill Battson (Cobourg, ON), Brad Cran (Vancouver, BC), Pierre DesRuisseaux (Parliamentary Poet Laureate), Shauntay Grant (Halifax, NS), Hugh MacDonald (Prince Edward Island), Ann Margetson (Cobalt, ON), Roland Pemberton aka Cadence Weapon (Edmonton, AB), Linda Rogers (Victoria, BC), and Agnes Walsh (St. John's).

Poetry readings on the Halifax/Dartmouth Ferry

4:30 pm - 6 pm FREE VERSE at the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia (1741 Hollis St.):
Join the poets laureate in the CREATION of new poems inspired by AGNS artwork

7 pm - 7:30 pm FREE VERSE at the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia (1741 Hollis St.):
PERFORMANCE of AGNS-inspired work by Canadian poets laureate, local writers and musicians

7:30 pm - 8:30 pm FREE VERSE at the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia (1741 Hollis St.):
The Poet Laureate in Contemporary Canada: A CONVERSATION

Additional opportunities to take in the talents of the poets laureate on July 14 and 15 will take place at The Company House (2202 Gottingen St.) for the Halifax Jazz Festival Words + Music Series.

Wednesday, July 14, 2010
9 pm Featuring Shauntay Grant, Hugh MacDonald, Pierre DesRuisseaux, Ann Margetson, and Linda Rogers, with musicians Sageev Oore, Dani Oore, and Chris Tarry ($15)

Thursday, July 15, 2010
9 pm Featuring Jill Battson, Brad Cran, Roland Pemberton aka Cadence Weapon, and Agnes Walsh, with musicians Silvio Pupo, Jamie Gatti, and Tom Roach ($15)

The event is sponsored by HRM, Art Gallery of Nova Scotia, and Canada Council for the Arts and Edmonton Arts Council.
